History of Automobile and its Development

Auto Mobile Is a Self-propelled vehicle used for transportation of good and passenger on the ground. It differs from aeronautical vehicle like aero planes helicopter rocket etc. Germany is the birth place of automobile.

  • 1769-Captain Nicholas Cugnot , a Frenchman is considered to be the father of the automobile. He built the self-propelled road vehicle. It had a three wheeled coach, fitted with a steam engine.
  • 1802-Richard Trevitluck of   England built the first practical steam automobile using the crank shaft first time.
  • 1821-Julis Griffiths of England built the comfortable steam vehicle.
  • 1863-Lenoir of French built the automobile propelled by the gas engine. This automobile had one engine cylinder using lighting gas.
  • 1876-Einne Lenoir of Belgium invented first practical example of internal combustion.
  • 1885-Gottleb Daimeler patented an internal combustion engine and installed this engine in a bicycle .The two wheeled vehicle run on liquid fuel similar to petrol.
  • 1886-Carl Benz of Germany built three wheeled carriage propelled by an internal combustion engine working on OTTO CYCLE.
  • 1895-Panhard and Levassor of France developed a car incorporating the main feature of present day automobile. It had the engine in front   of chassis. It also had brake, pedal, clutch and accelerator.
  • 1900 to 1906-The production and sales of the automobile become the real business, means auto mobile comes to market.
  • 1938-The first motor car appeared in Indian with taxi cabs in Bombay for manufacturing.
  • 1943- The Premier Auto mobile Ltd factory was set up at Bombay for manufacturing cars in India.
  • 1944-The Hindustan Motor Ltd factory was set up in Calcutta for manufacturing car in India.
  • 1956-Commercial vehicle manufacture starts and expansion and capacity of existing units.

    Maharashtra and Tamilnadu are the two   major states where most of the automobile and ancillary manufacturing units are located. After independent, other than premier Automobile and Hindustan Motor, Ashok Leyland Ltd, Mahindra and Mahindra, Telco (Jamshedpur)   joined this group for manufacturing automobile in India.
