Philosophy of Kindergarten

There are 3 distinct philosophies of kindergarten:-

  1. The Philosophy of the activity centered curriculum: Here pupils are actively involved in selecting goals, learning opportunities and appraisal procedures. A variety of materials to learn from are readily apparent in a stimulating learning environment.
  2. The Philosophy of the importance of pupils learning subject matter: Definite subject matter is prescribed for the pupil to attain.
  3. The Philosophy of measurement driven instructions. Definite objectives are developed first in the kindergarten curriculum.  Teacher then selects and aligns learning activities which guide kindergarten pupils to attain the objectives.  Emphasis is placed upon measuring observable and measurable outcomes of instruction.  To synthesize divers philosophies and beliefs in the kindergarten curriculum it is recommended that the pupils are provided.                                                                                      

a)Ample opportunities to choose interesting sequential learning opportunities.                                          b)Stimulating experiences which develop intrinsic motivation for learning.                                                  c)Opportunities to learn, to read and to write where readiness is in evidence. 

FREIDRICH WILHEML AUGUST FROBEL or FROBEL (1782 – 1852) was a German pedagogue a student of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi who laid the foundation for modern education based on the recognition that children have unique needs and capabilities.

He believed that “play is the highest expression of human development in childhood for it alone is the free expression of what is in the child’s soul.” According to Froebel, in play children construct their understanding of the world through direct experience with it.

Froebel’s philosophy of education consists of following components:-

a) free self –activity

b) creativity

c) Social participation

d) Motor expression
